The new Western Premier League has been introduced to provide a more appropriate and competitive environment for the strongest domestic teams across the association.

Over recent seasons, some teams have consistently outgrown traditional domestic divisions, resulting in uneven competitions and games that can be challenging for both stronger and developing teams. The Western Premier League aims to bring these top-performing teams together, creating more competitive matchups and a better basketball experience for everyone involved.

By providing a dedicated competition for higher-level domestic teams, the Super League will:

• Create more balanced and competitive games.

• Provide greater challenges and development opportunities for stronger players and teams.

• Reduce the number of one-sided results across domestic competitions.

• Improve the overall experience for players at all levels.

• Allow domestic divisions to be graded more effectively.

Importantly, the Western Premier League is not intended to replace representative basketball pathways. Instead, it provides an additional competitive opportunity for strong domestic teams who are looking for greater challenges within a domestic competition structure.

The introduction of the Western Premier League is designed to strengthen competition across all levels, ensuring players are participating in games that are enjoyable, competitive and developmentally appropriate.

What Does This Mean for Westside Suns?

While the Western Premier League has been introduced by the association, there are still a number of important decisions for clubs to work through, including how teams are formed, how players are selected and how the competition fits within existing club structures.

At Westside Suns, our priority is ensuring that any approach is fair, transparent and in the best interests of both the players participating in the Super League and those remaining within our domestic program.

Some of the questions currently being considered include:

• How should Super League teams be selected?

• Should existing teams remain together or should new teams be formed?

• Is there a need for player trials or assessment sessions?

• How do we ensure opportunities are communicated fairly to all eligible players?

• How do we minimise disruption to existing teams and friendships?

• What impact will Super League participation have on our domestic competition structure?

• How can we ensure the experience remains positive for players at all levels?
   

To help guide these decisions, the club is considering establishing a small working group made up of committee members, coaches and experienced volunteers. The purpose of the group would be to review available information, gather feedback and develop recommendations that align with the values and long-term goals of Westside Suns.
 

At this stage, no final decisions have been made. As more information becomes available from the association and discussions progress internally, we will continue to keep members informed and provide opportunities for feedback.
 

The introduction of the Western Premier League presents an exciting opportunity, but it is important that we take the time to carefully consider how it is implemented to ensure the best possible outcome for our players, teams and club community.
